Dummy ticket for visa: the complete guide

If you are applying for a visitor visa anywhere, at some point the checklist will ask for your flight itinerary or proof of travel arrangements. This page explains what that requirement actually means, what document satisfies it, and what happens if you get it wrong.

What a dummy ticket is

A dummy ticket — also called a flight reservation for visa, a dummy flight ticket, or an itinerary for visa — is a real airline reservation that has been held but not paid for. The airline blocks a seat, generates a booking reference (a PNR, or record locator), and holds it for a limited period, typically 10 to 14 days. You receive the itinerary document showing the route, flight numbers, dates and that record locator.

It is a genuine record in a real airline system. It is not a ticket, and it does not let you board. Both of those facts are visible on the document, and both are expected by the people reading it.

Why consulates ask for it at all

A visa officer is assessing whether your stated travel plan is real and internally consistent. Your application form gives arrival and departure dates. Your cover letter describes the trip. Your hotel booking covers certain nights. The flight itinerary is the document that ties those together and shows the route physically exists.

At the same time, almost every consulate warns applicants not to buy tickets before a decision. The Schengen states put it in their checklists. UK Visas and Immigration says the same. IRCC advises Canadian visitor-visa applicants not to make final travel arrangements until they have their visa. The requirement and the warning only make sense together if what is being asked for is a reservation, not a purchase — and that is exactly what a dummy ticket is.

Works, and costs ₹35,000 to ₹90,000 on a long-haul route, mostly non-refundable. If the visa is refused you lose most of it. If the visa is approved but delayed past your intended dates, you pay change fees. It is the safest-feeling option and the most expensive mistake.

How to tell a real reservation from a fake

Ask the provider a single question: can I look this up on the airline's website? Then actually do it. Open the carrier's "manage booking" page, enter the surname and the record locator, and see whether your reservation appears. If it does, the document is real. If the provider tells you the PNR "only works internally", or "will activate later", or sends you to a lookup site they control, you have bought a fake.

Mistakes that get applications returned

• Name mismatch. The ticket must match the passport character for character. "Ravi Kumar S" on a passport is not "Ravi S Kumar" on an itinerary.
• Dates that disagree with the application form. Officers read the itinerary next to the form. A two-day gap looks like carelessness at best.
• Itineraries that expire before the appointment. Ordering a month early means the hold lapses before anyone looks at it.
• Routes that do not exist on those dates. Seasonal and discontinued routes are a giveaway.
• Hotel dates that do not cover the flight dates. Two documents that contradict each other are worse than one document missing.
• A visible watermark or generator branding. Some free tools stamp their own name on the PDF.

Country-specific requirements
