Why a held reservation works for a Schengen application

The Schengen visa code asks for evidence of the purpose and conditions of your intended stay, and every member state's checklist turns that into a line about return travel arrangements. At the same time the checklists tell you, often in bold, not to purchase tickets before a decision is issued. A held reservation is the document that satisfies both instructions at once, which is why it is the most common request we handle.

Schengen files are also the strictest on internal consistency. An officer reads your application form, cover letter, flight itinerary, hotel bookings and insurance together, and any date that disagrees between them invites a request for more documents — which in peak season can mean missing your travel window entirely. Your itinerary should match the arrival and departure dates on your form exactly, and your accommodation must cover every night in between.

One detail people get wrong: you apply to the country of your main destination, meaning where you will spend the most nights, not where you land first. If the nights are evenly split, you apply to your first point of entry. Your itinerary should make that main destination obvious.

Documents that usually go with it

• Return or onward flight reservation covering your stated dates
• Accommodation covering every night between arrival and departure
• Travel medical insurance, minimum €30,000 cover, valid across the Schengen area
• Bank statements for the last three to six months
• Employment or business proof, and leave sanction letter
• Cover letter setting out the trip, day by day if it spans several countries
