Why a held reservation works for a Canada application
Canada's guidance is unusually clear on this. IRCC advises applicants not to make final travel arrangements until the visa is issued, and processing times for Indian applicants have been long and variable enough that the advice is worth taking literally. At the same time, the application asks for your intended travel dates and gives you space to explain your purpose of travel.
A held reservation is the practical answer. It gives you dates to state and a document to attach, without committing you to a fare while your file sits in a queue whose length you cannot predict.
Canadian officers weight dual intent carefully — the assessment is whether you will leave at the end of your authorised stay. A short, defined trip with a return reservation, supported by employment and family ties, reads better than an open-ended plan. If you are visiting family, an invitation letter with their status documents does more work than the itinerary does, but the two must agree on dates.
Documents that usually go with it
- Completed IMM 5257 application and family information form
- Flight reservation showing intended entry and exit dates
- Invitation letter from your host with their status document, if visiting family
- Proof of funds: bank statements, salary slips, income tax returns
- Employment letter with approved leave, or business documents
- Purpose-of-travel letter explaining the trip and your ties to India
Requirements change. Always confirm against the current official checklist for your application centre.
Mistakes we see on Canada files
- Booking real tickets on a processing time IRCC itself calls variable
- An invitation letter whose dates contradict the itinerary
- Funds that appear suddenly rather than accumulating
- Leaving the purpose-of-travel letter generic when it is the officer's main narrative

Getting yours
Fill in your visa application form first so the dates are fixed, then order the reservation two or three days before your appointment with names exactly as printed on the passports you will submit. It arrives within 20 minutes, and you can verify the record locator on the airline's own site before you go.

Canada visa questions
Does IRCC accept a flight reservation instead of a ticket?
Yes. IRCC's own guidance advises against final travel arrangements before approval, so a held reservation is what the advice points to.
How long should my reservation be valid?
Long enough to cover the officer's review of your file, which is why we issue two to three days before you submit or before a biometrics appointment rather than months ahead.
Do I need a hotel booking as well?
If you are staying in hotels, yes. If you are staying with family, the invitation letter and their address replace it — but the dates still need to match your itinerary.
