Why a held reservation works for a USA application

The US process is different from most: you complete DS-160 online, pay the fee, and attend an interview. There is no document upload and no checklist to satisfy. Officers make the decision largely on the interview, assessing whether you have shown strong ties to India and a clear, temporary purpose for the visit.

That does not make a flight itinerary pointless. It makes it a preparation tool. You will be asked when you are travelling, how long you are staying, who you are visiting and when you are coming back. Answering those questions from a document in your hand — with real dates you have thought about — is very different from improvising. Applicants who have not planned their travel tend to give vague, shifting answers, and vagueness reads as weak intent.

What you should absolutely not do is buy a real ticket before the interview. Wait times at Indian posts have been long and unpredictable, and a non-refundable long-haul fare bought before an interview is money at genuine risk. Bring a reservation, answer confidently from it, and buy after you have the visa in your passport.

Documents that usually go with it
