Why a held reservation works for a Vietnam application

Vietnam's e-Visa application asks for your intended date of entry, date of exit and the specific port you will enter through. Those fields have to match your flights, because the visa is issued for that entry point and that window.

Applicants regularly trip on the port of entry. If your visa says Noi Bai (Hanoi) and you arrive at Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), you have a problem at the counter. Get the itinerary first, then fill the e-Visa from it rather than the other way round.

Airlines flying India–Vietnam also check onward travel before boarding, so a return or onward reservation is worth having in hand regardless of the visa.

Documents that usually go with it

  • Passport valid at least six months, with blank pages
  • Flight reservation showing entry and exit dates and airports
  • e-Visa application with a passport-style photo and passport data page scan
  • Accommodation details for your stay
  • Proof of funds
  • Onward travel evidence for the airline check

Requirements change. Always confirm against the current official checklist for your application centre.

Mistakes we see on Vietnam files

  • An e-Visa port of entry that does not match the arrival airport on your ticket
  • Exit dates outside the e-Visa validity window
  • Filling the visa form before deciding the route
  • No onward proof at check-in

Getting yours

Fill in your visa application form first so the dates are fixed, then order the reservation two or three days before your appointment with names exactly as printed on the passports you will submit. It arrives within 20 minutes, and you can verify the record locator on the airline's own site before you go.

Answers

Vietnam visa questions

Does the port of entry on my visa have to match my flight?

Yes. The e-Visa is issued for a named port of entry, and arriving elsewhere causes problems at immigration.

Should I book flights before or after the e-Visa?

Reserve the flights first so the route and dates are fixed, then fill the e-Visa from the itinerary.

Is a return reservation needed?

For the airline check at your Indian departure airport, yes in practice.
